December 2004 In attendance: Robbie, Levon, Robert, Miriam, Leslie, Gordon, Therese, Megan and Jill. Regrets: Shawn Current Business: - Members of the committee celebrated the holidays with a small pizza party. - Robbie was elected chairperson for this meeting. - Members of the committee took turns reading November’s minutes. - Athletes took turns bringing up issues and discussing them as a group. Upcoming Events/News/Updates: 1. There is still room on the Penguin’s swim team. They start practice again on January 9th. 2. On December the 8th there was a floor hockey game between professional athletes and Special Olympics at the Westin Harbour Castle. It was a good game. The end result was a 4:4 tie. Several schools came down to watch the event. Edge from the World Wrestling Federation was there as was Kirk Harnett (he is the CEO of Sports Alliance). Some members of the committee wondered where they get professional athletes to come out for Special Olympics events. The Provincial office is in charge of this. The staff at National office are responsible for the Sports Celebrity Festival and Breakfast. Also, many athletes choose Special Olympics as their charity of choice. 3. Recently the Sports Celebrity Festival (a gala evening) was featured on ESPN. There were many Japanese cultural dancers (saluting the upcoming World Games in Naigano). There was also an auctioneer, and the Toronto Argonauts brought their Grey Cup. 4. There was a bowling fundraiser held two weeks ago for the Toronto Roadrunners. 5. Members of the committee wondered if there will be a talent show again this year. 6. There will be another newsletter in mid-January. Another athlete will be writing an article for the event. 7. The Madison Pub fundraiser is coming up in February. 8. The Penguins swim-athon will take place in February. 9. On February 5th, Mississauga will host an Invitational Floor Hockey tournament for C and D teams. Everyone will get a trophy for their participation. 10. On February 5th there will be the Quebec international Floor Hockey Tournament held in Montreal. 11. February 12th will be the second leg of the tri-regionals for 10 pin bowling. 12. The Mary Mathews Basketball tournament will take place on March 19th. 13. On March 19th (a Saturday), the Chris Bosh Provincial Fundraiser will take place. There will be 5 and 10 pin bowling again this year. Derek Knight is in charge of the event. They need to get the flyers out in January, especially to other leagues. More 10 pin bowlers are needed this year. Athletes need to pledge $75 to participate, but they don’t necessarily need to be on a team. This fundraiser is for Region 11 to participate only. The event should also probably be announced in the newsletter. 14. The Seals will be swimming with the Eels for an upcoming mini swim Tournament. Athlete Empowerment Issues : 15. There is an Athlete Code of Conduct. Head coaches have a copy of this. It outlines the protocol in the event that an athlete displays poor sportsmanship/behaviour during Special Olympics Events. 16. Athletes should not be bullied or gossiped about. Reviewing the Athlete Code of Conduct before practice may help reinforce this. If you have an issue with an athlete, address it with your coach. If it is out of their hands, they will then pass it on to the appropriate people. 17. With regards to theft, all athletes should keep their valuables as safe as possible. Sometimes lockers are available for practices/events (i.e. swimming). However they may have a cost (25 cents). Budget/Financing/Fundraising : 18. Head coaches can apply for money if their team needs it. Some teams are able to raise more money on their own than others. Also, some teams have greater expenses than others. Other Important Issues: 19. Global Messengers have to travel all over the world representing Special Olympics. One member of the committee was nominated for this position one year. 20. If there is no snow for the ski club this year, they will make their own on the hill. 21. Members of the committee wondered if the office would like to participate in playing against different team sports. Megan will check about this. 22. The password is needed from Marcia to continue the Athlete’s Phone Line. Megan is working on this. The next meeting will take place on Monday January 10th, 2004.
